Michael Tubridy was born just outside Kilrush, Co. Clare in 1935, in an area rich in traditional music, song and dance. Some of his mother’s siblings were musicians and their father was a step dancer, but had passed away before Michael was born. Michael himself would perhaps be best known as having been a member of such musical groups as Ceoltóirí Cualann, The Castle Céilí Band and The Chieftains, but has always had a keen interest in dancing sets, and step dancing as well. In recent years he has been devoting much of his time to the teaching of old traditional step dances, since his wife Celine became unable to teach any more. Most of the dances which he teaches have come from the repertoire of Dan Furey and his colleague James Keane, both from Labasheeda in West Clare.
