The Battlefield: a film by Emile Dineen

Following a fantastic premiere in Cork, glór is delighted to present Emile Dinneen’s film The Battlefield, (2018), to accompany Mick O’Dea Selects…a landmark exhibition of contemporary Irish Art, opening in glór gallery on Friday December 7th.

Mick O’Dea PPRHA is one of Ireland’s most renowned living painters. His diverse range of work includes a ten-year study of the War of Independence, culled from found and researched images. He pulls the heart out of these reproductions, breathing the living present into our imagined past. As the artist prepares a monumental exhibition in central Dublin, a film crew attempt to document the journey. Amidst the collision of history, memory and cinema, reality itself soon becomes an elusive combatant.

Emile Dinneen’s study is both whimsical and reflective, eschewing the traditional, reverential artist profile for a lively exploration of O’Dea’s creative process – his doubts and uncertainty alongside his artistic vision…

With Post-show Q&A with Director, Emile Dinneen.

Emile Dinneen is an Irish film director who grew up in Uganda. While in school in East Africa he began documenting the customs of the semi-nomadic Dinka herdsmen in Southern Sudan and made his first film during the civil war there in 2001. Since then he has worked for some of the UK’s leading directors while pursuing personal projects exploring history, myth and memory.

His most recent short – Rebirth – an interrogation of the experience of a young photographer to the epicentre of the war in Libya, won the jury award at Ireland’s national documentary festival. His feature debut Abasezi: The Nightdancers, emerged out of his work with grassroots community dance organisation Breakdance Project Uganda which he helped start over 10 years ago. He filmed The Battlefield over a year while Mick O’Dea was putting together his seminal exhibition The Foggy Dew.
