Carraigaholt is an old fishing port overlooked by a 15th century castle. The area has much to offer visitors with magnificent cliffs, rich and diverse fauna, geology and many water activities. Carraigaholt is located on the mouth of the River Shannon and it is part of the Loop Head Peninsula which is home to Ireland’s only resident 120 bottlenose dolphins.
It is a unique habitat consisting of sea cliffs rising out of the ocean, battling the stormy Atlantic waves. These sea cliffs provide nesting grounds for a variety of seabirds. The Loop Head Peninsula is renowned as one of Europe’s premier bird watching regions. The stony beaches and caves are home to grey seals and wild goats feed on the grassy slopes.
