The owners were Murphy's and O'Driscolls. The present owners are Pat and Mairead O'Brien, who purchased the premises in March 2003.

The name ‘The Blacksticks' came about when the authorities in the mid 1800's were constructing a new bridge over the nearby Derane River. They cut down oak trees in the Silvergrove Wood, blackened the timbers in the fire to harden them, then they made a frame and built the bridge, thus they pub became known as ‘The Blacksticks'.

The Blacksticks is famous for Irish traditional music sessions over the years. Some famous musicians have played in the pub, Martin Rocheford, Vincent Griffen, Paddy O'Donoghue, Mary McNamara, Kevin Carey, Pat O'Connor, Seamus Bugler and Kate McNamara to mention just a few. The traditional music sessions are still part of the entertainment on Bank Holiday weekends and some Saturday and Sunday nights.

There is also an area in the front of the pub which is used in the summer months, with benches and seats to sit out on a sunny day. Singing nights are also held and some well known singers take part.

The neighbouring town of Tulla have a Traditional Music Festival in mid-September and The Blacksticks organise a weekend of music in conjunction with the Humours of Tulla Festival.
