Clare Burren Marathon Challenge

Each participant has a choice of full, half or mini marathon on the day. All three challanges start in Ballyvaughan, Co.Clare at 9am, and all three finish back in Ballyvaughan, Co.Clare.

Full Marathon 26.2 miles

Participants must be over 16 years of age.

Leaving the village of Ballyvaughan, take a right up Fineona road, turning left onto the green road passing the Burren College of Art, and follow on to Glenfort, passing Rathbourney Church to Poulacapple where we take a left and leave the green road for the trail to Lislarheenmore. Back on the green road again we proceed down to Fermoyle, see the ruins of Fermoyle chapel in use until 1870.

There we take a sharp left, followed by a right, and climb up the scenic Caher Valley trail. See the "Ould Sheebeen" and enjoy the beautiful Burren along the way. As Fanore comes into sight you will also have panoramic views of the Aran Islands and the South Galway coastline. Down to Fanore and take a right at O'Donoghue's Pub and head for Ballyvaughan passing the renowned Fanore beach on your left. Leaving the main road and taking the last trail over Blackhead descending at Gleninagh overlooking the Castle. Joining back onto the main road, along the coast, passing the Pinnacale Well, will take you back to the finish line.

Half Marathon 13.1 miles

Participants must be over 16 years of age.

Leaving the village of Ballyvaughan, take a right up Fineona road, turning left onto the green road passing the Burren College of Art, and follow on to Glenfort, passing Rathbourney Church to Poulacapple where we take a left and leave the green road.

Half way up Poulacapple turn right heading for Faunarooska, Lismacsheedy and Aghaglinny on the green road. Leaving Aghaglinny for the trail down over Gleninagh, the Aran Islands, Gleninagh Castle, the Rine, and South Galway Coast will be in view. Joining back onto the main road, along the coast, passing the Pinnacale Well, will take you back to the finish line.

Mini Marathon 6 miles

Open to all ages and is wheelchair assessable.

Leaving the village of Ballyvaughan, remaining on the main road to Glenfort cross, where Patsy the Prince O'Lochlen lived till he was 95 years d.1952.

Take a sharp right back along the green road passing the Burren College of Art, along Cappanawalla road with stunning views of Ballyvaughan Village, The Rine, and Aillwee mountain. Continue back to Harbour Hill turning right onto the main road along the coast bring you back to the finish.
