The Sweet Power of Song in Kilkee
Cultúrlann Sweeney, Kilkee August 2nd at 8pm
Two local soprano's will raise the roof in Cultúrlann Sweeney, Kilkee this bank holiday weekend as they perform 'The Sweet Power of Song' a special collection of light operatic favourites as well as a selection of music from some of the greatest musicals.
Based in Quin, Helen Houlihan has enjoyed a busy career in the singing world performing regularly in concert, recital, opera and oratorio and in venues such as the National Concert Hall, the John Field Room and the Fortune Theatre in London. She has performed at several of the leading Arts Festivals and has sung with Opera Ireland, Wexford Opera, Opera Theatre Company, Anna Livia Opera and in London at the Holland Park Festival. Helen has been a guest soloist with the RTE Concert Orchestra and on several live television shows and she currently organises and performs a summer series of lunchtime recitals in the Church of Ireland, Bindon Street in Ennis.
Edel O'Brien comes from Kilrush and has an Honours Masters Degree in Music and Performance from NUI, Maynooth. After winning the Margaret Burke Sheridan Cup at the Dublin Feis Ceoil, she went on to study singing at Trinity College of Music, London where she was awarded a scholarship winning numerous scholarships and prizes. She spent two years working and studying on the Young Artists' Programme at the Centre de Formation Lyrique, Opera Bastille, Paris. She has sung as soloist with Opera de Paris, Opera Ireland, Opera de Rouen and the Anna Livia International Opera Festival. She has given recitals and concerts around Ireland, Britain and France, including in the National Concert Hall and the Sorbonne, Paris.
Helen and Edel, will be accompanied by Irina Dernova on piano. Irina is the organist in St. Michael’s Church (Limerick) and the organ scholar in St. Mary’s Cathedral, studying the organ in Limerick School of Music under the tuition of Trevor Selby. Jane Hughes will accompany on cello. She has worked with the RTE Concert Orchestra and the RTE National Symphony Orchestra amongst others and has performed with such international artists as Ronan Keating, Rod Stewart, Westlife, Sarah Brightman, Charlotte Church, Kiri te Kanawa, Luciano Pavarotti, Jose Careras and Placedo Domingo.
