The Rose of Clare festival is very much family orientated with activities catering for all ages. The highlights include family funday events, tug-o-war, dog show, table quiz, race nite, pub singing competition, ceili, parish golf outing, discos and of course the crowning of the 2014 Rose of Clare.

Includes three open air ceilis in the town square with the Johnny Reidy Ceili Band, the Five Counties Band and the Star of Munster Band, set dancing classes, a singers club and numerous music sessions. There will also be a musical boat trip to Scattery Island. A Festival not to be missed.

Ellen (Nell) Galvin as she was locally known was born Ellen McCarthy, and lived at Ballydineen, Knockalough, Co. Clare. She was born in 1887. Around the 1920’s and 1930’s a famous blind Piper named Garret Barry lived in Inagh Co. Clare. He was a regular visitor to the McCarthy home. Nell was one of his pupils and she played both the Concertina and Fiddle from a very young age.

The strong tradition of Trading and the reputation of Kilrush as being a key Market Town along the Shannon Estuary are still very much alive today with 4 Traditional Horse Fairs taking place in the town each year. Horse/ Pony traders position themselves about the Market Square while traders selling all kinds of goods from household items to plants line Frances Street.
