Thread Song

Thread Song commemorates the life and work of Nobel Prize-winning poet, William Butler Yeats, one of the foremost figures of 20th century literature.

Work in Thread Song has been made in response to the life and/or poetry of W.B. Yeats. Yeats was greatly inspired by the Irish landscape, as is evident in his work. The artists were asked to respond to The Song of Wandering Aengus. This poem, which first appeared in 1899 in a collection of over 30 poems entitled The Wind Among the Reeds is a wonderful example of the rich visual and textural possibilities of Yeats’ poetry. The collection was published at a time of cultural innovation in Europe when writers and musicians were becoming more aware of the traditional oral culture of their native lands, helping to further develop and drive the cultural innovation in Europe.

Work in this exhibition is a celebration of Ireland, through the prism of one of its most renowned literary icons. Featured artists include Frances Crowe, Patricia Cox, Frances Leach and Lesley Stothers.

The exhibition will be accompanied by textile workshops.
