The Doonbeg Currach Regatta will take place on August Bank Holiday Monday at Doonbeg Pier. A great day of rowing is guaranteed with twelve races taking place. These consist of Traditional 3 Hand Mens & Ladies (Confined and Open), 4 Hand Naomhog and Mixed. For the winners there are Perpetual Cups, Trophies and Prize money.
Large numbers of people gather on the pier to watch teams of rowers compete. The competitors travel from Galway, Kerry, Limerick as well as our local rowers from Doonbeg, Kilkee, Kilrush, Quilty and other parts of Clare to demonstrate their skill in the use of these old sea-fishing boats.
Training locally for these regattas begins in March when the Hughie Byrne charity row takes place from Kilrush to Carrigaholt. All those interested in taking up this pastime are more than welcome to form a team and participate. A Bouncing Castle is on site to entertain the children. Also refreshments are available. Come and support this old tradition of currach racing.
A presentation of trophies and prizes take place after the festival. A big Thank You to all our sponsors and to all who help out to make this an enjoyable and successful day.
