The Gathering is an initiative about promoting our Country to Ireland’s global diaspora in the hope that they will be encouraged to visit during 2013. It will be a spectacular year-long celebration of all things Irish and County Clare will be part of it. The intention is to attract large numbers of international visitors to County Clare during 2013.

Over 70 million people worldwide claim Irish ancestry. This initiative provides the perfect excuse to reach out to those who have moved away, their relatives, friends and descendants, and invite them to our wonderful County. There will be clan gatherings, festivals, special sporting events, music and concerts taking place all across the county, all year long.

At County level, a Steering Group has been established which is being jointly led by Clare County Council and Shannon Development and also includes representatives from the GAA, FAI, Comhaltas, ICA, Love Live Music, Clare Roots Society, Library, Chambers of Commerce, Clare Sports Partnership, Irish Hotels Federation, Clare Vintners, Clare Tourism Forum, Ennis Town Council and Clár as Gaeilge.

The County Steering Group organised an ‘ideas generation’ workshop which took place on the 2nd July in Ennis and was attended by over 160 people. Some of these ideas are being progressed and will develop into new Gathering events for 2013.

Clare Library Service has produced ‘Gathering branded’ postcards which can be made available to any event organiser for the purpose of targeting people living abroad and inviting them home. The Library sourced six old postcards from their collection and they have produced a ‘then and now’ version of each.

A Gathering Festivals & Events Guide 2013 is currently being compiled for County Clare and this will be a key promotional and marketing tool.

Details of Gathering Specific events can be uploaded directly to the official Gathering website and all events will also be listed on the Clare Tourism website
