Kilrush or Cill Rois meaning the “church of the woods” has existed since the 16th century and is a landmark Maritime and Market town that lies at the beating heart of West Clare.
Kilrush is the essence of the Irish experience. Its stunning sea vistas where the majestic Shannon River and thunderous Atlantic meet, its dramatic and poignant history, it’s tradition of warm hospitality and rich sporting and musical culture has lured visitors from far and near to Kilrush’s streets for well over a century.
In June 2010, the Kilrush Historic Town Trails were officially launched and were created to highlight the different aspects to the heritage of Kilrush such as the commercial, industrial and financial history, the ecclesiastical heritage and the history of learning and education all of which in their own important way have contributed to the development of the town.
A shorter Historic Town Trail will take you from the Market Square, the heartbeat of the town, down beautiful broad Frances Street towards the Marina and outwards to Cappa Pier, showcasing a number of significant and beautiful buildings along the way. An extended trail then continues from Cappa Pier, along Fort Rd. and on through the Vandeleur Walled Demesne taking you back to the Market Square via the Turret Lane and Moore Street. The information boards found along the Trail provides you with interesting information relating to the town’s past.
Further information and copies of the Historic Town Trail Map and Guide can be obtained from the offices of Kilrush Town Counicl, Market Square, Kilrush (open all yea) or from the Tourist Information Office, Frances Street, Kilrush (seasonal opening).
