John is one of Irelands leading Ornithologist with 30 years of experience. At a young age and during primary school he developed a love of nature but particularly birds. He is a freelance Birdguide, who has lead trips to many parts of Europe including Greece, Turkey, Portugal & Spain. His love of birding has taken him to many parts of the world including America North & South, Canada, Great Britain, Scotland, Africa North and South, Europe east and west, Scandinavia and Iceland. He is a qualified bird ringer, lecturer, author, bird photographer and wildlife cameraman. When not leading tours he runs Waxwing Wildlife Productions Ltd, filming and Producing Nature documentaries for Irish and International Television.

The Burren has a wealth of excellent bird watching areas. Little is written about these spots and few of us are aware of the importance of these limestone hills and valleys, especially from an ornithological point of view. Galway Bay and the waters of the Atlantic surround sandy inlets and rocky shores to the North. These are extremely productive for breeding seabirds and visiting winter wildfowl. While South facing slopes, or sunken valleys of hazel and whitethorn scrub, have their own little microclimate, perfect for hatching insects or native fruits to ripen. Open plateaus of calcareous rich meadows and seasonal flooding Turloughs are also rich with invertebrate life forms, and play a vital role in sustaining the birdlife of this region. In this, the first of a series of articles compiled especially for the Burrenbeo Trust, we look at three areas for you to visit throughout the whole year. Some of these sites you will not find in any tourist flyers or leaflets, but are considered hot spots for birding.
